3D Printing

3D Printing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. 3D Printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes. It is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques, which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods such as cutting or drilling (subtractive processes). Since the start of the twenty-first century there has been a large growth in the sales of these machinese, and their price has dropped substantially.

There has been hype about 3D Printing in the medical world, where 3D Printer are speculated to have vast potential in making organs for transplant. For example, in 2011, researchers have alerady used printers to build quarter-sized two chamber hearts, which spontaneously start beating about four to six hours later.

In the field of aesthetic surgery, our group postulates that there may be a possibilty of 3D Printing being applied in the near future. 3D Printing with plastic filmanets may be applied to print implants such as breasts and noses. In such a world, patients would have total control over the exact shape and size of the implants they want.

In the far-fetched future, there may be a radical possibilty that 3D Bio Printing may be applied in the field of aesthetic surgery. Consumers may have the choice and ability to own a variety of 3D-Printed features such as breasts, noses and buttocks, and are able to synthesize these body parts to their real body. In this way, we would have the choice of not only what to wear everyday, but which nose we have, how big our breasts are, and the like. However, given such a scenario, there would obviously be a need for strict regulation and monitoring.

Consider the consequences of such a world: people would be given the liberty of printing extra limbs and organs themselves. Would we see things like eight-limbed human beings, and part-dog-part-human in the name of “freedom of expression” in a world like this?
