High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound

The technology of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), traditionally used for cancer treatments (such as treatment of tumours of the liver, kidney, breast, bone, uterus and pancreas), but recently the application of HIFU has been broadened to body-sculpting, which is the optimizaiton of the smoothness, defintino, or silhouette of the human physcique, particularly the torso. Currently, the most common medical procedures for body sculpting is liposuction. HIFU provides a non-surgical and non-invasive alternative to liposuction for removing unwanted fat in non-obese patients. The treatment, called Liposonix, is already available in Europe, Canada, and Asia. The capabilities of HIFU are only beginning to be explored.
